MY JOURNEY FROM SUBURBIA TO A NATURE-MADE EXISTENCE

My Favorite DIY Skincare Products

I am putting together a few of my favorite topical recipes that I've gathered over the years and tweaked here and there. That's the fun thing about making your own products. Once you establish basic recipes, you can change them up to work for you. You can modify them to use up ingredients that you already have and are more familiar with, or you can find ways to make existing recipes more powerful. You need to be using organic (or at least non-GMO) ingredients for best results.

Hair Mist

This hair mist is great for those with hair loss and breakage as it promotes follicle strength and new growth. This is detoxing your scalp, which nourishes and balances its pH levels. It will also help treat inflammation in the scalp.

2 Cups Purified Water (or Distilled)

2 twigs fresh rosemary (or 1 Tablespoon dried)

1 Tablespoon Fenugreek Seed

5 drops Lavender Essential Oil

5 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil

Small Spray Bottle

In a small saucepan over medium-low heat, simmer rosemary and fenugreek seeds in your water for about 30 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool. Strain your water into a bowl and add your essential oils. Pour into your spray bottle. Any that won't fit can be stored in a glass jar in the fridge for up to a few weeks.

After washing, while still wet, spray hair from root to tip and leave in. Can be used daily, even on dry hair.

Blemish Cream

This recipe is so simple. I use this as a daily moisturizer before applying any makeup. A little bit goes a long way. It can also be used as a night cream.

1 Tablespoon Coconut Oil

1/2 Tablespoon Shea Butter

1 Teaspoon Beeswax Pellets

1 Teaspoon Dried Helichrysum Flowers (optional)

10 Drops Lavender Essential Oil

7 Drops Tea Tree Essential Oil

5 Drops Frankincense Essential Oil

3 Drops Lemon Essential Oil

In a double boiler on medium-low heat, gently melt coconut oil, shea butter, and beeswax pellets. Add your helichrysum (if you have it), and let that infuse for about 20 minutes in the mixture. Remove from heat and let cool. Add your essential oils. You can either simply let it harden from here or stick in the fridge for about 10 minutes, remove it, and whip with hand mixer for fluffier consistency.

Anti-Aging Cream

3 Tablespoons Coconut Oil

2 Tablespoons Shea Butter

2 Teaspoons Beeswax Pellets

1 Tablespoon Dried Helichrysum Flowers (optional)

1 Tablespoon Rosehip Oil

2 Teaspoons Vitamin E Oil

5 Drops Frankincense Essential Oil

5 Drops Lavender Essential Oil

In a double boiler on medium-low heat, gently melt coconut oil, shea butter, and beeswax pellets. Add your helichrysum (if you have it), and let that infuse for about 20 minutes in the mixture. Remove from heat and let cool. Add your rosehip oil, vitamin e oil, and other essential oils. Place in fridge for about 10 minutes. Remove and whip with hand mixer until fluffy. Store in glass jar in cabinet, drawer, or under sink.

Headache Tension Balm

Here is a great recipe for a lovely headache balm that is light and extremely helpful in times of need.

Lavender Rosemary Shampoo

This is a basic shampoo recipe that is a simple one to start with. Lavender and rosemary are great for scalp and follicle health.

Rose Face Cream

I love using rose because it smells wonderful and is incredibly soothing for your skin. Rosewater and oils can be pricey, so I make this cream sparingly. I also do not have apricot oil, so I've replaced it with jojoba, hemp, rosehip, or argan oil in the past.

ACV Toner

I really enjoy this toner because it balances your skin's pH and does not dry it out. It is also great for reducing fine lines and discoloration.

1 Cup Distilled or Purified Water

1 Tablespoon Organic Apple Cider Vinegar

5 Drops Lavender Essential Oil

Pour all ingredients into spray bottle. Use daily on clean face before applying moisturizer. Store in drawer or under sink.

Charcoal Face Mask

Activated charcoal is great for cleansing your pores. It will detox your skin and help with blemishes and fine lines in the process. Activated charcoal is something that needs to be a part of your arsenal because it has SO MANY wonderful uses.

Scalp Scrub

If you have a dry scalp or problems with thinning hair, then you need to consider working in a scalp scrub to your beauty regimen. You should also give your body a good cleanse because these are signs of hormonal disruption. I have several other articles on how to detox your body, but this product will be a good start. I am not crazy about recipes that use oil. I find it is difficult to rinse out.

1 Tablespoon Himalayan Pink Salt

1/2 Tablespoon Apple Cider Vinegar

2 Drops Tea Tree Essential Oil

Combine your ingredients in a small bowl and let sit for at least 20 minutes. Apply to damp hair and massage scalp. Rinse out with shampoo. Use once every 2 weeks.
